At its launch in 2022, the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 Pure Electric was the first CKD-assembled BEV in the Malaysian market. Stylish, well-built and very powerful, the XC40 P8 enjoyed a superb reception at the outset.

However, with many newer models both from direct rivals such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, as well as newer competitors like Tesla in the premium segment, the XC40 P8 has faded into the background. In addition, at RM 278k currently, it is also undercut by quite a few rivals.

But how does a circa RM 70k price cut sound to you? WapCar’s new Cars for Sale page recently turned up some awesome deals on pre-owned XC40 P8 models, spread across 2022 and 2023 units with prices starting at just RM 185k. Of course, we had to check this out and here's what you need to know. 

Overview

The Volvo XC40 P8 was officially launched in 2022, with a price tag of RM 262,460, on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of SST discounts at the time.

Developing 408 PS and a max torque of 660 Nm, the XC40 P8 is powered by dual electric motors sending power to all four wheels (AWD). The official 0-100 km/h sprint time is a claimed 4.9 seconds while top speed is capped at 180 km/h.

Battery capacity is rated at 78 kWh, providing a 418 km range on the WLTP cycle. As for charging via the CCS (Combine Charging System) Combo 2 connector, the Volvo XC40 P8 can take up to 11 kW in AC charging and supports up to 150 kW DC fast charging.

Wheels are 19-inch items wrapped with staggered tyre sizes, with 235/50 R19 rubbers at the front and 255/45 R19 at the rear.

As synonymous with all Volvo models, safety is top-notch. The Volvo XC40 P8 gets the full IntelliSafe ADAS suite with AEB, LKA, CTA, BLIS, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, and Run-off Road Mitigation. There’s also Pilot Assist, a level 2 semi-autonomous driving feature.

The facelifted 2023 XC40 P8 was introduced at the tail end of 2022. With all 2022 units spoken for before the SST period ended, the 2023 units brought subtle improvements as well as a price hike to RM 278,888.

There’s a new front bumper with more angular design motifs and triangular-shaped headlamps. It basically received the newer Volvo C40’s look. On the inside, the XC40 P8 received a new gear lever, a Harman Kardon sound system and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system that runs on Android Automotive OS. A PM2.5 pre-cleaning air purifier was also added to the equipment list.

Why buy a pre-owned 2022 Volvo XC40?

Well, it’s a surefire way of beating the initial depreciation of BEVs. At approximately RM 70k less than the (SST-discounted) new price, these 2022 units are cheaper than a new Tesla Model Y (even after recent price reductions) and more than RM 100k down on any new Mercedes-Benz EQA (at RM297k) you can buy.

The second reason is the Volvo XC40 P8 is a very accomplished car. With superb looks and a brilliantly designed interior, it is a practical BEV that works very well for families. Also, with 408 PS and 660 Nm of torque, it also offers bonkers performance that is sure to put a smile on your face.

Lastly, the XC40 P8 is also offered with a great warranty package that includes a 5-year vehicle warranty and service package and an 8-year BEV battery warranty. Purchasing one of these 2022 units means you still have about 3 years of warranty and maintenance service left which further adds to your savings over time.

So, there you have it, an accomplished and practical BEV SUV offering loads in savings over a brand-new model, not to mention, a great way to join the premium BEV segment at a substantially cheaper price point. 

Also, with several units having mileages of less than 10,000 km, these 2022 (and 2023) units are almost as good as new and look the part.
