Following the recent viral video of a Chery Omoda 5 allegedly experiencing a rear axle (specifically, a lower control arm) failure, Chery Malaysia confirmed today that it will inspect a further 600 cars to check and if necessary, replace the affected parts.

Chery says the issue is traced back to a "facility upgrade exercise." Presumably, this refers to the company's contract manufacturer Inokom's plant in Kulim.

The Chery Omoda 5 is locally assembled (CKD) in Kulim.

The 600 affected cars are traced based on their vehicle identification number (VIN, or chassis number).

Unlike regular workshops, every job in a car plant is logged electronically. If the cause of a quality issue has been identified, the plant can refer to its job logs to confirm when was the particular offending tool or machine last inspected, and from there, they can trace the VIN of the cars that were manufactured during this period of time.

This is why not all Chery Omoda 5 owners will be contacted. Only the 600 affected cars will need to be inspected once more.

This is the latest update following the 28-April 2024 issue that allegedly saw the rear lower control arm of an Omoda 5 broken whilst being driven on a smooth road, without being involved in an accident.

The customer-reported issue highlighted on Facebook recently was determined to be an isolated case. We have promptly addressed this concern by replacing the rear axle beam component and conducting comprehensive quality control tests on the affected vehicle. We can confirm that the matter has been successfully resolved.

Chery Auto Malaysia views this matter seriously as customer safety is our utmost priority. In ensuring that we provide full transparency and accountability we have reached out to the parts vendor and have done an in-depth analysis. We are now able to confirm that 600 vehicles are potentially affected due to the facility upgrade exercise.

As a precautionary measure, Chery Auto Malaysia will be reaching out to customers of the affected Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) for a detailed inspection to resolve all technical component issues.

We would like to reassure customers that no other vehicles are affected. Chery Auto Malaysia continues to focus on upholding the safety of our customers and ensuring their peace of mind.
