volvo abs module Q&A Review

Can a car’s braking system work normally even if the ABS modulator is faulty or damaged?

Yes, we have a rusty Volvo that would apply the ABS brakes when ever it rained and the sensors got wet. I just pulled the abs fuse. The car brakes fine with out abs.

My odometer might have been rolled back or replaced. Is there a way to plug into the car itself and see the actual mileage?

You can check (mycarfax.com) and look at the service histories for free. I have changed the instrument cluster on my Volvo with a junkyard unit twice because they stopped working. When I scan the car with my Autel scanner, I get a code saying that the miles do not match, but no check engine light or indication on the instrument cluster. On my BMW, changing the instrument cluster results in a tamper dot next to the odometer, which is just a little red dot. The way to check the true miles on the BMW is to use a BMW specific scanner like INPA and read the miles on the ECU, TCM, or ABS module. They all store miles in them.

Do manual cars have traction control?

Traction control has nothing to do with the transmission at all. German cars have had traction control even in manual transmission vehicles since the late 1990s. it works not only by cutting throttle but also by triggering the anti-lock brake of a spinning wheel in order to transfer power to the opposite side wheel and if it's all wheel drive it can do the same to the front wheels or rear wheels to transfer power to the opposite end of the car. Bosch invented this kind of traction control like I said in the late nineties and virtually all European cars since the early 2000s have this technology. VW, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Volvo, Mercedes, etc all use Bosch or Siemens ABS modules in conjunction with Bosch Siemens or other Engine Control Modules to accomplish this. It's been standard for a long time.

Could a fault in the ABS system be the cause of the fault gearbox in the Volvo V70 2004 model?

Without looking at a wiring diagram, all I can say is possibly. Or I should say the issue causing the ABS fault may be affecting the TCM. Encountered this recently with a… I think it was a 2014 MY… GM pickup. Crank, no start condition. Found that the fuel pump wasn’t powering up. Also found that it was not reading the ABS module. Went after the fuel pump issue. Found that the relay had power at 30 (as it should), at 86 with the key off (which it shouldn’t have, because that’s not a ground side switched circuit), and no continuity at 85 either with the key off or on the accessory position. Located the ground, did a voltage drop test from the battery negative to that ground. Found a substantial voltage drop. The ground was loose. The fuel pump and ABS ECM used that same ground. Correcting the grounding issue corrected the fuel pump and ABS issues. So yes, it’s possible. I can’t tell you that it either is or isn’t in your case, and without being able to do a hands-on assessment, I’d want to look at a wiring diagram before trying to point you in any direction as far as diagnosis goes. But without having the means to rule it out at the moment and no idea what the errors you’re getting are, the possibility exists. Now if your ABS error is for, say, one wheel speed sensor, the two issues probably aren’t linked.

I’m in need of an ABS Module for my car, is there any websites where I can find one for a reasonable price? Dealership is charging me almost $2,000 for the part and labor.

What is the breakdown for the part and how much is the labor costing? You might save a few bucks on the part, but the labor won't change. The easiest way to locate the part is to do a Google search for ABS module for (car year) (car model) (car name). For example, if you need the module for a 2005 Toyota Camry, then put those words in the Google search. You will be presented with multiple options, new and rebuilt and used. I would not suggest purchasing a used anything having to do with the braking system. There are repair companies that specialize in certain manufacturers' cars….Hondas Only, Toyotas Limited, Volkswagen Only, Volvo Exclusively or some kind of combination name citing the manufacturer, etc. These are independent auto service providers, not associated with the dealer. Frequently their prices are lower than the dealers. Again, for such a critical component, I would not advise going to just any old car repair shop. Stick with the independent name brand only or with the dealer. when you do the part search, take those price ranges to the dealer or repair shop and ask them to be competitive, or ask if you can supply your own part. Some will not permit it because they want to guarantee the part and if you buy it they cannot do that. But just showing them that you know you can get your part a lot cheaper may encourage them to lower their price.

The speedometer on my Volvo 960 has failed and no replacement is available; this is causing transmission malfunctions. Are there any work-arounds?

9 times out of 10, it's the rear abs/speed sensor going out. The Volvo's transmission control module, uses the speed input to shift your car, and your speedometer is also getting its signal from there. I'd check it and the wiring going to it. Those are simple enough to find at a parts store

Are Volvo’s generally an expensive car to maintain?

I'll never own another one. Volvo has the most expensive software I know of. The Volvo specific software that is used to code modules and to scan manufacturer specific codes for ABS, Airbag, etc. was $8000/ year the last time I checked. As a DIY car owner, I find that ludicrously expensive. I have the equivalent for my Audi that cost about $500 and doesn't expire.

Which BMWs and Mercedes models were extremely reliable?

Here is a real time analysis of the cost to maintain any cars as per all manufacturer. Honda is #1…. but Mercedes is #1 for German cars. This is the bible on the dependability of every manufacturer over 5 or 10 years depending in your extended warranty service contract . Companies that issue those extended warranty service ae the ones paying the bills. They have the data on the results per car manufacturer. I ,perform Quality Control ( QC ) and audit on cars being serviced with defects, All manufacturers with a new model are loaded with issues. some are small and some are major as Mercedes had in 2004 -2008 with the New 350- 3,5 liters V6. Some problems are so small but the outome may be removing and dismantling the engine to repair the bad plastic guide for the timing chain or malfunctioning camshaft adjustment solenoid on the Mercedes V6-350. Toyota, for example, has a high average cost of repair but quite a good index rating - which means that the car fails infrequently but when it does you will be in for a larger than average bill.
