This coolant leak from my Subaru looks like Sherlock Holmes. https://t.co/bghWAKVnOl
Yep, it's a Subaru... Tore down, ready to get cleaned up. The head gasket is mostly leaking oil, but there are signs (duh it's a Subaru) that it was just starting to leak coolant. Rest of the motor looks fine. Machine shop tomorrow, should have it all back and running this week https://t.co/SbPZ1nWT1j

3 hours of trackday and the #subaru #impreza hasn’t caught fire or spilled coolant yet, weird. https://t.co/TMAxkD0s25
Just checked the #Subaru's coolant after the return 190-mile run yesterday and it's exactly where I left it. Excellent. Now I can refit the undertray and carry on with other jobs – like fitting new discs and pads, some sound-deadening material and perhaps even my new wheels... https://t.co/8UrKzbxZwk

Good folk of #cartwitter - checked over the #subaru today and coolant is a tad low. It's green and the owner's manual is in Japanese so not very illuminating. Anyone know the correct coolant spec? https://t.co/q46cjKuEQL

If you are asking that question I have a feeling that the Subaru Impreza is close to 125K or more miles. You will always find oil leak on earlier models of Subarus but coolant leak may tell me that overheating may have occurred also. Oil leak may come from crankshaft and camshaft seals, likewise from valve cover gaskets. Those items will not compromise head gasket sealing. A diagnostic using engine and coolant dye will give a more detail answer. The Subaru "Boxer 4 cylinder" engine has an "open deck" block structure meaning there isn't much sealing area around the cylinder bores. The usage of multi layer steel gaskets helped but I saw and repaired more Subaru head jobs per vehicles sold than Honda and Toyotas, usually around 125K to 150K miles.
That would entirely depend on whether the radiator would need a re-core or replacement, and the cost of labor in your jurisdiction. Ask an automotive center, they will be glad to give you a quote.
I change coolant in ANY car about every 3–4 years or roughly 30,000 miles. My rule is you can never have antifreeze or oil that is “too clean.”
If it's already overheating you've kind of already lost the battle. If we are talking about me, I can test to make sure my head gaskets are not leaking and the heads are not warped. I can find the root cause of the leaking, puking, and overheating. I can replace whatever components need to be replaced. But if we are talking about you I think it's a safe bet that you need to take ot to someone who knows Subaru's and get everything checked out. Be honest and tell them the whole story so they can fix it right the first time and test everything. You wont be saving money if they only fix part of the problem and you go out and burn up your engine. Oh and the more you drive it like that the more money you will spend in repairs because you are causing more harm every mile. Since this is the internet and I cant see your car I must recommend a tow to the shop.
Just replaced the coolant in my 2007 STi over the weekend. Your car will be a little different but not too much. I would highly recommend getting a spill proof funnel. It replaces the radiator cap with a giant funnel to ensure you are getting the air bubbles to the highest point in the system. Wait til the car cools down, remove the radiator cap, then install the funnel. After you hook that up, fill it with distilled water then start the car. Alternatively, you can park on a hill or jack the front of the car up to ensure the radiator fill is the highest point in the system. With the car running, turn the heater on full blast. This removed any air bubbles from the heater core. With the car running, squeeze the upper radiator hose every now and then to get some air out. Let the car fully warm up. I like to rev it a bit and hold it around 2000rpm for a little bit to get the coolant flowing. Once the car warms up, run it for about 10–15 min, and keep squeezing the upper hose every few minutes. After that, shut the car off and let it cool down while still squeezing the upper hose every few minutes. You should be good to go after that but may need to do it once or twice again. Replace the radiator cap, and go drive.
Put the car up over your shoulder, loosen the radiator cap, and gently slap the rear bumper.
Prestone is a brand name. There are many types of coolant under the Prestone brand. If you use a Prestone brand coolant type compatible with your Subaru then, yes.
In summary, it would generally be safe to assume the Beck/Arnley Premium Prediluted ,Antifreeze, / ,Coolant, EXTENDED LIFE BLUE ,coolant, (P/N 252-1501) is the absolute closest ,coolant, in the aftermarket to ,Subaru, OEM ,coolant,.
As has been said you have a head gasket failure. Besides repairing the engine you must clean the entire cooling system of oil and replace all the rubber hoses or they will fail from the oil contamination.
I’m pretty sure it means that a new Pope has been elected. <sorry, I couldn’t resist.>
