At its launch in 2021, the Hyundai Kona Electric became Malaysia’s cheapest BEV, with prices starting around RM 150k. However, since then, a salvo of newer BEV models have undercut it, arriving at the minimum price threshold of RM 100k set by the Government.
The 3 main models in this price bracket currently are the BYD Dolphin, Neta V and the recently introduced MG4 EV. However, browsing WapCar’s new Cars for Sale page reveals several pre-owned 2022 model-year Hyundai Kona Electrics starting at just RM 85k.

The Hyundai Kona Electric was offered in three variants at launch – the e-Lite, e-Plus, and e-Max, priced at RM 149,888, RM 169,888, and RM 199,888 respectively, fully-imported (CBU) from Korea.
After subsequent price adjustments, the current Kona Electric range is now priced as follows:
Kona e-lite (39.2 kWh): RM 156,538
Kona e-plus (39.2 kWh): RM 176,838
Kona e-max (64 kWh): RM 204,348
The Kona e-Lite and e-Plus have a 39.2-kWh battery with an electric motor that makes 136 PS/395 Nm. Claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time is 9.9 seconds, while top speed is 155 km/h. Driving range on a WLTP cycle is rated at 305 km.
Meanwhile, the e-Max gets a larger 64-kWh battery and its electric motor churns out a maximum output of 204 PS/395 Nm. It does 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and tops out at 167 km/h. Driving range on a WLTP cycle is rated at 484 km.
The Hyundai Kona Electric comes with a standard vehicle warranty of 2 years/50,000 km and an EV battery warranty of 8 years/160,000 km.
However, Hyundai Malaysia also offered an optional extended warranty package which covers the vehicle for 5 years/100,000 km with 3 years/50,000 km free service maintenance for a premium of RM 10,000.
Why choose a pre-owned Hyundai Kona Electric?
At current prices of circa RM 85k, these pre-owned units of the Hyundai Kona Electric allow you to purchase your first BEV at roughly the same price as a B-Segment hatchback.
The Kona Electric is also a B-Segment SUV that offers more practicality, style, and driving performance than BEVs like the BYD Dolphin and Neta V.
As for the downsides, the Kona Electric e-Plus features a relatively small 39.2 kWh battery, and the BYD Dolphin (44.9 kWh) and MG4 (51 kWh) both have larger batteries and longer driving ranges.
With that said, the Kona Electric is efficient; on WapCar’s previous testing, The Kona Electric (e-plus) delivered an approximate 300 km of range for a full charge.
As per our inquiry, the listed 2022 units only have the standard 2-year/50,000 km manufacturer warranty. Therefore, these units may only benefit from the 8-year battery warranty, of which 6 years remain.
