Mazda has confirmed that last week that it will be expanding its SUV line-up to 5 brand-new models starting in 2022. One of those models is the Mazda CX-60 and a couple of them have been spied completely undisguised.
According to various media sites, the pair of CX-60s were taken in Ehime Prefecture, Japan for a commercial or B-roll footage. The images only show the front end of the SUV while the rear shots are literally covered.
Based on the photos, the pair might show at least two variants of the CX-60. The white one appears to be a premium variant while the red one is probably a sporty trim judging on the trims – chrome on the white CX-60, black on the red CX-60.
The Mazda grille sits large and proud much like the rest of the line-up but the grille on the CX-60 looks more squared-off. Meanwhile, the front bumper displays vertical cutouts on each side, giving a little bit more character to the SUV.
The Mazda CX-60 is expected to be launched in 2022 and is positioned above the CX-5. It along with the CX-80 are planned to be launched for the European and Japanese market but Mazda hasn’t ruled out other markets including Malaysia.
Both the 2-row CX-60 and 3-row CX-80 are focused on markets with "narrower roads and smaller parking lots" that are favourable in Japan and Europe. Meanwhile, the just-launched CX-50, 2-row CX-70, and 3-row CX-90 are wider and more focused on the North American market.
It is still uncertain what goes under the CX-60 but during its SUV expansion announcement, Mazda has revealed that its new range of SUVs will feature newly developed engines and powertrains.
Chief among them is a range of 6-cylinder petrol and diesel engines which are available on a brand-new rear-wheel-drive (RWD) platform. Perhaps the CX-60 could feature that configuration or perhaps it will share the same front-/all-wheel-drive layout just like the CX-5.
Recall that the inline-6 unit and RWD layout are also expected to be in the all-new Mazda 6.
