The all-new Nissan Almera is an underrated gem for sure but in terms of sales, it is unmatched compared to the Honda City and the Toyota Vios even in Malaysia. In February however, Miss Mera did the unthinkable in Thailand when it overtook the Vios as the second best-selling B-segment sedan.
According to the latest sales data, the Toyota Vios (which is sold as the Yaris Ativ in Thailand) was the second best-selling B-segment sedan in the Kingdom in January, behind the Honda City. The Nissan Almera climbed from third in January to second in February with 1,454 units sold compared to the Yaris Ativ’s 1,156 units.
The Thai-spec Toyota Yaris Ativ might look like the Malaysian-spec Vios but they use different engines. The Yaris Ativ is powered by a 1.2-litre 3NR-FE (92 PS/109 Nm) which qualifies it as an Eco Car in the Kingdom.
Toyota sells the Vios in Thailand which is powered by a 1.5-litre 2NR-FBE (108 PS/140 Nm) but that model is essentially the previous Vios with a different face.
Still, the Almera managed to outsell both the Yaris Ativ and the Vios in February which is quite an achievement for Nissan.
However, the Yaris Ativ remains the second best-selling B-segment sedan for the first two months of the year. Can the Almera continue its streak to overtake the Yaris Ativ’s first runners-up position?
Meanwhile, the Honda City maintains its position as the best-selling B-segment sedan for 2021 so far with 4,576 units sold in the first two months of the year. In spite of some reported rust problems in the chassis, that has clearly not affected sales.
Perhaps Thais have finally come to realise the potential of the all-new Almera. The Thai-spec Almera is powered by the same 1.0-litre turbocharged HRA0 3-cylinder (100 PS/152 Nm) as our local spec model.
Don’t knock the Nissan sedan out of the woods just because it has a smaller engine, after all, it even won our inaugural Car of the Year in 2020.
