Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has confirmed that its next-generation range of models will be electrified, focusing on mild-hybrids (MHEVs) first.
Speaking on the matter at a recent media event in Kuantan, Denyu Bostandzhiev, Managing Director VPCM said: "No doubt the next-generation cars will be definitely mild-hybrids. Generally the technology in the group will be mildly electrified; this direction of course we will follow. I can assure you electrification is coming, we are now under preparation."
For example, VW's European portfolio majorly consists of hybrids – either eTSI for the MHEVs, or eHybrid for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Most current models, such as the new Mk.8 Golf and all-new Tiguan are all available with the 48V powertrains.
However, Bostandzhiev clarified that VPCM aren't planning to introduce PHEVs anytime soon.
Meanwhile, VPCM is treading the battery electric vehicle (BEV) lands very carefully, emphasising on localisation. "First we have to ensure the car can be localised. It's a totally new world for us, and from next year if a company wants BEV incentives then it should be localised, and this is the direction that we are now chasing," explained Bostandzhiev.
The MD stated that the company is still studying the right mix between range, prices, and equipment. "Those things we very carefully observe to decide where to be. The equipment of the car will be fully-equipped. And that's why I think if we're at a certain disadvantage because we're late, but we'll have the advantage of bringing the right product. Especially with range," he clarified.
