UMW Toyota Motor has launched the new generation 2024 Toyota Hiace in Malaysia. Available only in only one super-longwheelbase (SLWB) high-roof window van variant, the new Hiace is imported from Japan (CBU), priced from RM 169,000.
The Japan-made Hiace SLWB will be sold alongside the previous generation Hiace standard wheelbase (SWB) panel van, which is still being produced at Toyota’s Shah Alam plant, only as a panel van.
The new generation SWLB is powered by a new 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbodiesel, paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift. The 4-cylinder D-4D engine makes 177 PS / 450 Nm. Now that the engine has been further in front (previous Hiace’s engine was under the driver’s seat), the driving experience will be more comfortable.
The model is equivalent to the Toyota Commuter sold in Thailand, albeit with different seating configurations.
Aimed at tourist van operators, our Malaysia specifications Hiace SWLB has 10 seats, all with seat belts. The seating configuration is rather odd, nothing like what you see in Thailand. The rear seats are all arranged on the right-side, all twin seats.
The left-side is left empty, presumably for compliance with local regulations on minimum width of emergency exit gangway, for tourist vans (which oddly, is not enforced on the Chinese vans sold here).
Rear passengers are kept cool by the rear air-conditioning (with independent blower speed).
The Hiace comes with 3 airbags and electronic stability control (VSC), front and rear fog lamps, as well as power adjusting and folding side mirrors. There's also a light on the sliding door's step, and a built-in dashcam.
The new Hiace SLWB measures 5,915 mm long, 1,950 mm wide, and 2,280 mm tall, with a 3,860 mm wheelbase.
Over 15 years of experience in automotive, from product planning, to market research, to print and digital media. Garages a 6-cylinder manual RWD but buses to work.
