Toyota Indonesia has begun exporting the first batch of the Toyota Innova Zenix Hybrid to the global market. This comes around 4 months after the TNGA-based Innova made its global debut in the archipelago.
PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) aims to export more than 8,000 units of the all-new Innova in 2023 which comprises 30% hybrid electric variants and 70% internal combustion engine (ICE) variants to countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.
TMMIN also expects that the export of the Innova Zenix will gradually increase yearly and aims to increase that figure to 17,000 units overall by 2025.
“The first exports of electrified vehicles, starting with the Innova Zenix Hybrid, are part of Toyota Indonesia’s efforts to participate in achieving the Government's target of decarbonization, being a leading Green Economy and supporting the country’s trade balance,” said President Director of TMMIN, Warih Andang Tjahjono.
“This CBU export achievement includes electrified batteries that are assembled locally at our TMMIN plant in Karawang. Toyota Indonesia has introduced various models of low carbon vehicles through our multi-pathway strategy, from fuel-efficient and biofuel vehicles, including our hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) such as Innova Zenix Hybrid and even plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), and battery electric vehicles (BEV). We will continue to maintain Indonesia’s position as a key production and export base of electrified vehicles, especially HEVs,” added Warih.
Toyota Indonesia started export activities in 1987 with the first shipment of the 3rd-generation Kijang to Brunei. The Kijang’s successor, the Innova would continue to be an important model for Indonesian export markets. Besides the Innova, Toyota Indonesia also exports up to 9 models including the Fortuner and Avanza.
The Innova Zenix Hybrid made history as the first electrified model exported by Toyota Indonesia and will be a significant factor to increase the company’s export vehicle volume target by 5%. Aside from the volume increase, Toyota Indonesia also aims to reach more export destinations as well.
As of 2022, Toyota Indonesia has exported to more than 80 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Oceania, and the Middle East.
Meanwhile in Malaysia, the outgoing Innova is still on sale and our unit is assembled locally (CKD). Perhaps the same might go for its successor and that might also include the hybrid variants. Currently, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is the only electrified Toyota model to be locally assembled, so perhaps the Innova Zenix Hybrid would join the fray.
