In Malaysia, the gap between the Mazda CX-3 and Mazda CX-5 is filled by the Mazda CX-30. Why isn’t there a Mazda CX-4? There exists a Mazda CX-4, but it’s a China-only model.

The Mazda CX-4 was first introduced in 2016 but it was discontinued late last year. The Mazda CX-30 is also sold in China but it’s uncompetitive the salvo of Chinese battery EV (BEV) models coming onto the market.

This Mazda Arata concept is developed in partnership with Mazda’s local partner Changan, and if its sloping roofline is an indication, is an electrified replacement for the CX-4.

Of course, we cannot discount the possibility that this Arata concept previews an SUV that will replace the CX-5 in China. However, it is very unlikely for the Arata to replace the CX-5 in global markets.

The Mazda CX-5 is a very USA-centric model, and the intellectual property rights agreement will likely mean that the Arata will, like the CX-4, be a China-only model, developed to meet the unique needs of mainland Chinese customers.

If Mazda is to debut a new generation CX-5, it will most likely be in the US. The current generation CX-5 made its global debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Mazda didn’t share many details about the Arata concept, other that it is an electrified vehicle, which in Chinese context, will most likely mean that it will be available in two powertrains, a fully electric BEV or plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

We also cannot rule out an extended range electric vehicle (EREV) drivetrain. EREVs are PHEVs that use its engine solely as a generator. The European / Japanese market Mazda MX-30 R-EV, which uses an 830cc rotary engine as a generator – fits the definition of an EREV.
