2023 saw a new sales record for electric vehicles (EVs) in Thailand as 76,314 units were sold in the Kingdom and it is predicted that 2024 could be another blockbuster year. According to sales figures compiled by Autolife Thailand, 13,653 EVs were sold in January 2024.
Though that number might not sound entirely significant to some, EVs accounted for 20.5% of new vehicle registrations in the first month of the year. 65,067 new vehicles were sold in Thailand in January.
Thailand seems to be on track to be one of the largest EV markets in Southeast Asia both in sales and production. The Land of Smiles has been enticing many EV makers, most of them Chinese, to set up production facilities to enter the growing ASEAN market.
The top 10 best-selling EVs in Thailand for January are Chinese EVs with the BYD Dolphin taking the number one spot with 3,175 units sold. The BYD Seal took second with 3,008 units and the Neta V saw 2,013 units moved to bring home third.
The biggest loser however would be Tesla which saw mere double-digit sales for both the Model Y (37 units) and Model 3 (15 units). 2024 might not be a good start for the brand led by Elon Musk as it is a significant drop in figures compared to the previous month (Y: 568 units, 3: 460 units).
