Both feature ADAS
Back in September earlier this year, the all-new 2022 Honda BR-V made its debut and a little over a month later, the all-new 2022 Toyota Avanza followed suit. Both boast a host of improvements along with a bump in features.
In this article, we’ll put the 2022 Honda BR-V and the 2022 Toyota Avanza for a side-by-side comparison to find out which one tickles your fancy.
The 2022 Honda BR-V is imbued by Honda’s current design language with the Solid Wing Face chrome front grille. Like before, there’s body cladding on the bottom edge of the exterior.
Meanwhile, the 2022 Toyota Avanza appears less rugged without body cladding or roof rails, and a sharper design overall.
Dimensions wise, the 2022 Toyota Avanza measures shorter and narrower than the 2022 Honda BR-V in terms of overall length and width. However, the Avanza has a longer wheelbase.

Which is a nicer place to be in?
Inside the 2022 Honda BR-V, the dashboard is inspired by the Indian-market Honda Amaze, down to the pair of symmetrical air vents. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported.
The dashboard now gains a soft touch segment on the passenger side, as well as additional USB ports.
Over to the 2022 Toyota Avanza, some similarities can be drawn against the Toyota Raize/Daihatsu Rocky (twins of the Perodua Ativa) with the angular creases on the dashboard, plus some switchgears like the gear lever and steering wheel buttons.
Which has more grunt?
Powering the 2022 Honda BR-V is a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre DOHC petrol engine that’s shared with the current-generation Honda City, churning out 121 PS and 145 Nm. Transmission duty is handled by a CVT.
Under the bonnet of the 2022 Toyota Avanza also lies a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre DOHC petrol engine that makes 106 PS and 136 Nm. Unlike its rear-wheel drive predecessor, power goes to the front wheels via a CVT.
From the power figures mentioned, it's clear that the Honda BR-V is the gruntier one of the two.
Both the Avanza and BR-V have received a boost in the safety department. The range-topping variant of the BR-V now adds the Honda Sensing ADAS suite, which includes:
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
Road Departure Mitigation (RDM)
Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS)
Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS)
Auto High Beam (AHB)
Lead Car Departure Notification (LCDN)
Airbag count is up to six and in typical Honda fashion, there’s a LaneWatch camera in place of blind spot monitors.
Meanwhile, upper variants of the Toyota Veloz (can be regarded as an Avanza variant, sold in Indonesia) get six airbags as well as the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) ADAS suite that bundles:
Lane Departure Assist (LDA)
Pedal Misoperation Control (PMC)
Front Departure Alert (FDA)
Pre-Collision System (PCS)
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM)
Which is cheaper?
In Indonesia, the 2022 Honda BR-V starts from IDR 275.9m (~RM 80k) to IDR 339.9m (~RM 99k), while the 2022 Toyota Avanza starts from IDR 206.2m (~RM 60k) to IDR 228.5m (~RM 67k).
However, the more upmarket Veloz starts from IDR 251.2m (~RM 73k) to IDR 291.5m (~RM 85k), which is still cheaper than the range-topping BR-V.

Conclusion
Note that these are based on Indonesia-spec cars, which may differ to our Malaysia-spec cars when they arrive on our shores.
That being said, both the all-new 2022 Honda BR-V and 2022 Toyota Avanza appear to be rather closely matched on paper, and it just might boil down to personal preferences at the end.
The quest for automotive knowledge began as soon as the earliest memories. Various sources information, even questionable ones, have been explored including video games, television, magazines, or even internet forums. Still stuck in that rabbit hole.
