Freshly unveiled at the ongoing 2024 Beijing International Auto Show, this is the all-new Mazda EZ-6, a product of the Mazda-Changan joint venture to take on the deluge of rivals within the Chinese market.
Unmistakeably Mazda in its styling, the EZ-6 is scheduled for launch in the Middle Kingdom by the end of this year. At point of publication specification and prices are not disclosed just yet, though Mazda says it will come with a battery-electric or a plug-in hybrid (BEV, PHEV) powertrain. It will also be rear wheel drive.
Mazda claims that the BEV model has an expected driving range of approximately 600 km, while the PHEV model is expected to achieve over 1,000 km of driving range on a single tank of fuel on the CLTC cycle.
What's not much of a secret is that the EZ-6 is built on the same platform as the Deepal SL03, a model under one of the Changan sub-brands. The EZ-6 then could follow the same powertrains as the SL03, with these options:
The EZ-6 measures 4,921 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,485 mm tall – roughly 56 mm longer overall, 50 mm wider and 35 mm taller than a petrol Mazda 6 sedan.
Other features include a 50:50 weight distribution for the BEV model, electric powered rear spoiler, the ability to control the vehicle by voice, ADAS, and a smart cabin that responds to voice, touch, and gestures.
Will this be the next-generation Mazda 6?
It is a bit hard to tell at the moment. Mazda ostensibly states that it will "continue to work with Changan Automobile" to introduce unique products that meet the needs of Chinese customers, which pretty much pegs the EZ-6 as a China-only product.
Meanwhile, the EZ-6's base car, the Deepal SL03 is already in our part of the world. Thailand sells it as the Deepal L07, and was only launched there back in January 2024.
