Under a new ruling by the Government, workshops will have to display the names of mechanics and their qualifications, as well as spare part origins from now on.
In an effort to provide customers with more transparency and confidence when choosing workshops, the ruling was meted out by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living as part of the Consumer Protection (Workshops Information Disclosure) Regulations 2022, effective 1-July 2023.
Initially gazetted in June last year, workshops were given 1 year to prepare for the changes, which came into effect at the start of this month.
Furthermore, workshops will also be required to clearly state the category of spare parts β either new, used or reconditioned β to clearly inform customers of what parts are going into their vehicles, and if any modifications are being done.
In addition to improving consumer protection, the move is intended to encourage workshops to hire qualified and trained technicians or train existing staff to obtain relevant qualifications from vocational or technical institutions.
With regards to the ruling, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said, βThe postponement period for the enforcement of the Consumer Protection Regulations 2022 ended on June 30, 2023 and it is in full effect nationwide as of July 1, 2023. Action can be taken for any breach of the regulations as stipulated under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 (Act 599).β
Arvind can't remember a time when he didn't wheel around a HotWheels car. This love evolved into an interest in Tamiya and RC cars and finally the real deal 1:1 scale stuff. Passion finally lead to formal training in Mechanical Engineering. Instead of the bigger picture, he obsesses with the final drive ratio and spring rates of cars and spends the weekends wondering why a Perodua Myvi is so fast.
