PT Astra International, the sole importer of Peugeot cars in Indonesia has announced that it will stop distributing the French Lion 52 years after it was introduced in the country. This decision was reportedly made by Peugeot’s parent company, Stellantis as it focuses on growth in the ASEAN region.
“According to information by Stellantis, it has made a decision to stop the sales of Peugeot vehicles in Indonesia,” Rokky Irvayandi, Chief Executive of PT Astra International – Peugeot Sales Operation told Viva Otomotif. “This is a part of Stellantis’ business growth strategy in the ASEAN region.”

Following the announcement, Astra Peugeot closed all of its social media accounts and sales of its 3-model lineup in Indonesia – Peugeot 2008, Peugeot 3008, and Peugeot 5008 – ceased. The trio of Peugeot models in the archipelago are fully imported (CBU) from Malaysia.
Still, the distributor promised its customers that aftersales support will continue at all 4 official Peugeot service centres around the country.

Introduced in Indonesia in 1972, Peugeot has seen its fair share of ups and downs in the market. Its first model in the archipelago was the Peugeot 504 which became a hit among buyers for its classy elegance. The 505 that succeeded it also received a welcoming reception but the Peugeot 405 did not fare as well in Indonesia compared to Malaysia.
In 2003, Astra Peugeot introduced the Peugeot 206 in locally assembled (CKD) guise which revived the French Lion’s acceptance in Indonesia. Though it was only sold for 3 years, the 206 became the all-time best-selling Peugeot model in Indonesia according to OtoDriver.
Peugeot never gained back the sales peak it once had in Indonesia. According to sales data obtained from GAIKINDO, only 199 units of the entire Peugeot lineup were sold in 2023. Poor sales in Indonesia might be a cause for Stellantis to pull the plug on the archipelago but could it return as the principal distributor just like in Malaysia?
