At its launch at the tail end of 2022, the BYD Atto 3 certainly wasn’t the first BEV to go on sale in Malaysia, but few BEVs enjoyed such popularity among Malaysians eager to get into their first BEV. The Atto 3 surpassed 1,000 orders just 10 days after launch, soon after becoming Malaysia’s best-selling BEV in 2023. Blending sharp looks, practicality, and great value for money – it was the right product at the right time. However, the BEV market has since ballooned in Malaysia, with no less tha

Among Southeast Asians, Malaysians are most supportive of China, according to a survey of 1,994 Southeast Asians by Singapore’s ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute. When asked if a situation forces them to choose between USA and China, 75.1% of Malaysians answered China – the highest in the region. Is there a correlation between results of a political opinion survey and the rapid rise of Chinese car brands launching in Southeast Asia? The short answer is ‘Yes’. It appears that even market leader BYD is not immune to the slowdown in battery EVs (BEVs), with April 2024’s global sales of BYD’s BEV models reversing 3.9%, to 134,465 units. It’s BYD’s first month of decline for BEV models in a very long time. Note that this is a wholesales figure (vehicle is transferred to dealer), not actual vehicle registration by customers. Still, the slowdown in BEV demand is not a big problem for BYD. Unlike Tesla, BYD doesn’t believe in a BEV-only product line-up, prec

BYD ended April 2024 by recording its best-ever monthly sales for exports, at 41,011 units, up 176.6% year-on-year. The figure excludes BYD buses, but includes BYD’s passenger sub-brands Denza and Formula Bao. To date, BYD has exported over 430,000 vehicles, including commercial vehicles. From January to April 2024, BYD sold 936,446 units of ‘new energy vehicle’ passenger cars globally, up 23.6% from the same four-month period last year. April 2024’s figures amounted to 313,245 units, up 3.5% fr

Sime Darby Beyond Auto, the Malaysian distributor of BYD cars just announced that bookings for the revised 2024 BYD Atto 3 are now open. According to its website, the updated Malaysian-spec Atto 3 is only available with one variant and prices start from RM 150,430 on-the-road without insurance. In other words, prices for the revised Atto 3 remain the same but that is not the only thing that is unchanged for Malaysia's best-selling battery electric vehicle (BEV). Instead of a larger battery like

BYD has yet to trouble the top-tier Japanese brands like Toyota or Honda in Malaysia’s overall car sales, but it will soon surpass second tier brands like Ford and Nissan. It has already propelled past VW. According to data compiled by RHB Investment Bank, Sime Darby Beyond Auto, the distributor of BYD cars in Malaysia, sold 1,919 units in the first quarter of 2024. RHB says BYD now controls 71% of Malaysia’s battery EV (BEV) segment. That puts BYD ahead of VW’s 412 units and Volvo’s 560 units,
