Commercials and advertisements are often seen as an annoyance but sometimes, there are a few gems that pop up that you simply don't want to skip. Take this latest commercial of the Toyota GR Corolla from the United States.
The newest commercial depicting the GR Corolla is the final instalment of the Toyota GR model lineup ad campaign for America. The trilogy of ads pokes fun at the whole process of making a commercial.
It goes through the process of the pitch, the focus group, and finally the shoot all while featuring the GR Supra, GR 86, and the GR Corolla respectively. The GR Yaris isn’t represented here as the rally-inspired hyper hatch is never sold in the States. This series of ads though makes up for its loss with immense entertainment value.
Having once been in the advertising industry, it is amusing to see the clients depicted in each of these commercials. Comments like “Why should such and such be depicted this way?” or “We don’t want to show fun factor Y for our product as it doesn’t fit the brand,” bring back some dejected memories but in this case, I’m glad that Toyota agreed to greenlight this meta piece of commercial.

But enough about that, the GR Corolla’s commercial itself is cool and elevates a lot of action befitting a hyper hatch. From drifting across the snow to jumping over a petrol station, the GR Corolla shows off its might in the nearly 5-minute commercial.
The most entertaining part though happens around halfway when our hero in the GR Corolla stumbles upon an old first-gen Corolla with its hood propped open. Instead of stopping to help the owner of the KE10, the GR ‘Rolla speeds off with the driver remarking “It was a trap. Have you ever seen a Corolla broken down?”
That was a reference to a classic Corolla commercial from the 2000s.

Sure enough, the KE10 was merely pretending to break down and it chased after its great(x11)-grandchild. The sleeper KE10 managed to keep up with the GR Corolla as they drift around a street.

Best of all, the stunts performed are real and there is no CGI involved. The drivers used include pro drifters like Fredric Aasbo, Ryan Tuerck, and Ken Gushi according to CarBuzz while the scenes were shot in California and Utah.
Given how the GR Corolla and other Gazoo Racing models elevate Toyota’s image in the eyes of enthusiasts, this commercial definitely ups the appeal of the GR Corolla even further. The GR Corolla is available in Malaysia with prices starting from RM 355,000.
