January 2021 has been a strong month for the UMW Group as car brands under their umbrella - Toyota and Perodua - sold a cumulative 20,739 units. The company attributes this to the SST-exemption incentive that goes on until 30-June 2021.
Good start for Toyota
The company said its subsidiary, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT), sold 3,845 units in January 2021, a 4.1 percent increase from the 3,692 units sold in January 2020.
Meanwhile, Perodua registered 16,894 units last month, and targets to sell 240,000 units in 2021 - a 9 percent increase over the 220,163 units sold in 2021.
Additionally, Perodua also plans to increase production to 272,000 vehicles this year - the highest in their history. This production target is a 23% increase over the 220,968 units manufactured in 2020.
In the process, the carmaker aims to purchase RM 6.5 billion worth of locally-sourced components in 2021. With every model having 90% locally parts content, Perodua remains Malaysia's biggest customer of automotive components.
Total TIV to increase this year
In the same statement, UMW Holdings Berhad President and Group CEO, Dato' Ahmad Fuaad Kenali expressed his gratefulness to the government for allowing car assembly, showroom, and service centre operations under the current movement control order (MCO).
"We are also thankful to the government for extending the sales tax exemption incentive to 30 June 2021, which has enabled the Group to register healthy sales in January," he said.
Dato' Ahmad also noted that the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has forecast that the total industry volume (TIV, or industry-speak for total cars sold in a year) will grow by nearly 8% to 570,000 units in 2021, underpinned by the projected gross domestic product (GDP) growth of between 6.5% and 7.5% this year.
