Yes, believe it or not, the best-selling MPV in the world is an MPV from China named the Wuling Hongguang. According to Focus2Move, this is the fourth year running the Hongguang took the crown as the best-selling MPV in the world, selling over 100,000 units more than the second place MPV, the Honda Odyssey in 2020 alone.
The Wuling Hongguang is produced by SAIC-GM-Wuling, it is currently in its second generation launched back in 2018 and sold only in China. We’re not pulling your leg.
Only the first generation Hongguang was sold overseas, known as the Confero in Indonesia and Chevrolet Enjoy in India. There is also a commercial version known as the Wuling Formo on sale in Indonesia as well.
In 2020, the Hongguang sold 292,934 units making up 7 percent of the market share. Though the number is much less than the units sold in previous years, the MPV still managed to maintain its top spot in the best-selling MPV charts.
Following a distant second is the Honda Odyssey with 149,065 units sold (3.6 percent share) ahead of the Buick GL8 that sold 146,859 units (3.5 percent market share).
The most interesting is the Toyota Alphard, the premium MPV jumped 12 spots in 2020 allowing it to comfortably settle as the fourth best-selling MPV in the world. In 2020, the Alphard sold 119,560 units peeping out cars like the Kia Soul (109,332 units) and Toyota Sienta (88,350 units).
As you know, the motoring industry was hit badly during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, expect the numbers to be more by the end of 2021.
There isn’t a time in memory that doesn’t involve staring at cars. After discovering the excitement of watching Schumacher vs Hakkinen, Formula 1 became a major part of life. The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
