Yesterday, Stellantis announced that it is studying the feasibility of local production (CKD) of a few brands under its umbrella in Malaysia. One of those iconic brands is Citroen which left the Malaysian market at the end of 2020.
Though there is no timeline of when the French double chevrons brand will make its return nor confirmation of what models will be brought in, models currently offered in developing markets give a bit of clue on what to expect.
Citroen recently unveiled the first images of the Citroen Basalt Vision, a new compact SUV coupe concept that will be launched in India and South America in the second half of 2024 (H2 2024).
Though Citroen calls it a concept, the Basalt Vision looks more like a production-ready preview of the upcoming B-segment crossover. The French automaker described the Basalt Vision as a combination of “the fluidity and dynamism of a coupe, the advantages and robustness of an elevated SUV, and the balance and space on board of a 5-door saloon.”
Perhaps the Basalt Vision could be given the C3 name as Citroen stated that the crossover will support its international growth alongside the C3 and C3 Aircross in major markets.
“All three models are part of the same programme to bring to market models with a strong character and a distinctive onboard comfort experience. Basalt Vision is a faithful vision of the model that will be offered to customers in the second half of 2024,” Citroen stated in the press release for its upcoming model.
For now, only exterior photos have been unveiled and Citroen could reveal the interior closer to the production version’s unveiling.
Like the C3 and C3 Aircross, the Basalt could be built on Stellantis’ Smart Car Platform which is configured specifically to meet the needs of customers in developing markets.
