A few days ago, Perodua uploaded its newest corporate video which features a curious-looking crossover hatchback that many netizens think it’s the upcoming 2021 Perodua D55L.
Well, sorry to break your excitement but it's not the crossover you're looking for. Instead, it could be something else, the next-gen Axia Style.

The crossover seen in the video isn't entirely new though. Based on the rear design, it resembles a concept car that was shown by Perodua at the 2018 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS18) called the X-Concept.
The X-Concept was designed by a team led by the chief designer of Perodua, Muhamad Zamuren bin Musa. Despite looking like an SUV, Zamuren said that the concept was a hatchback with some hints of crossover styling.
"Hatchback with hints of crossover styling" sounds very familiar. Well, that's because there is one currently on sale by Perodua and it is surprisingly popular despite lacking Bluetooth support.
Recall that the Perodua Axia has been introduced since 2014 with a couple of facelifts in 2017 and 2019. The Axia Style variant was added in 2019 but Perodua's entry-level hatchback is due for a replacement in 2022.
Based on the dimensions given, the size of the X-Concept is shorter than the Myvi in terms of length and wheelbase. This could mean that the X-Concept might preview the next-gen or at least the crossover variant of the next-gen Axia
Daihatsu has a history of turning many of its concepts into production vehicles. If you think this only applies to Daihatsu, remember the Perodua Bezza concept from 2010? No prizes for guessing what that became.
There are still a couple of years to go before the next-gen Axia. If the X-Concept does become the next-gen Axia, it's a very proud moment as the design of the hatchback is headed by a Malaysian and it looks very sporty, especially for an entry-level hatchback.
