Singapore to end sales of diesel-powered cars and taxis from 2025 01

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA), the equivalent of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) of Malaysia, announced that registration of new diesel passenger cars and taxis will be discontinued from 1 January 2025.

The cessation of new diesel cars in Singapore was first announced in 2021 as part of the city island state’s vision for all vehicles to run on cleaner energy by 2040. However, the new regulations do not cover diesel-powered commercial vehicles including vans, pickups, light trucks, and heavy-duty vehicles.

Diesel cars account for a minority in Singapore even among taxi companies which largely use hybrid-powered cars like the Hyundai Ioniq and Toyota Prius. According to LTA, diesel cars and taxis have taken up less than 1% of new registrations since 2021.

Carmakers have also discontinued diesel models in Singapore with only two models being officially listed – Ssangyong Tivoli Diesel and Alpina XD3 Diesel – but these aren’t from mainstream brands. Diesel-powered Land Rovers and Mercedes-Benz are offered through parallel importers but these do not sell considerably either.

Meanwhile, existing diesel car owners who intend to keep their car post-2025 are allowed to renew their Certificate of Entitlement (COE) but the LTA added that these “will be subject to higher road tax as a disincentive to discourage renewal”.
