Previously, we reported on Proton’s plans for a return to the Pakistani market, and right now, that time has come. The Malaysian Tiger’s first model for its Pakistani comeback is the Proton X70 but there is a slight twist.
According to CarSpiritPK, there were two units of the Proton X70 shown at the Pakistani media preview. Both units were the flagship Premium 2WD variant. There are 4 variants of the X70 available in Pakistan which are the Standard 2WD. Executive 2WD, Executive 4WD, and Premium 2WD.
However, the Pakistani-spec X70 is powered by a smaller turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine that produces 177 PS and 255 Nm which is mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox.
Just for comparison, the local X70 is powered by a turbocharged 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine that produces 184 PS and 300 Nm and mated to the same DCT gearbox as the Pakistani X70.
Besides the smaller engine, the Pakistani X70 is similar to the Malaysian X70. The Premium 2WD variant comes with an 8-inch infotainment screen with the “Hi Proton” voice command, Nappa leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, a hands-free power tailgate, and 9 speakers.
As standard, the X70 in Pakistan comes with projector LED headlamps, LED DRLs, and 18-inch wheels.
The safety features on the Pakistani X70 are also similar to the Malaysian X70 with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, and hill hold assist as standard. The ADAS suite which includes AEB, LDW, and BLIS is only available on the top-of-the-range Premium 2WD variant.
The X70 in Pakistan comes with a 5-year/150,000 km warranty which will be an industry first in the country in the hopes to attract more customers.
Proton Pakistan has yet to announce prices for the X70 there but it is expected to be released via a digital launch on 18-December. In Pakistan, the X70 is expected to be priced lower than its competitors, the Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson.
The initial units of the Pakistani X70 will be fully imported (CBU) from the Tanjung Malim plant before local assembly is set to commence before June 2021.
