Proton ended March and the first quarter (Q1) of 2024 on a positive note with 12,666 units sold last month domestically and globally. Total sales for Q1 2024 are 39,150 units with export sales 63% higher compared to last year.
P1 remains the second best-selling carmaker in Malaysia at the end of the quarter with an estimated 19.3% market share.
In terms of models, the Proton Saga remains the company’s best-selling model with 5,906 units sold in March 2024. In total, 18,247 units of the entry-level sedan were sold in the first 3 months of 2024 which was the strongest Q1 performance for the model since 2013.
In second place is the Proton S70 which saw 2,072 units sold in March. The newest Proton retains its title as Malaysia’s best-selling C-segment sedan of the month and has seen 5,828 units moved in the year thus far. That puts it as the second-highest-selling P1 of Q1 2024.
Rounding up the podium is the Proton Persona with 1,665 units sold in the third month of the year. It sold 5,370 units in Q1 2024 which puts it behind the Proton X50 in quarterly sales volume (5,444 units).
Proton’s SUV sales continue to be in demand among buyers in March with the Proton X50, Proton X70, and Proton X90 selling 1,626 units, 603 units, and 326 units respectively. However, the trio are no longer leading their respective segments with the X50 and X90 placing second in their class and the X70 third in its segment.
“The first quarter of 2024 ended positively for Proton and with no external factors encouraging sales growth this year, the numbers achieved offer a more accurate reading of market demand. The automotive industry in Malaysia continues to be buoyant, and this is evident by the overall growth in TIV,” said Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar.
“For the rest of the year, Proton will look for continued sales growth by working closely with our vendors to produce more units of our best-selling models, such as the Proton Saga and Proton S70, while continuing to build our export sales volume. We are confident of meeting our growth targets while also working towards our other commitments such as the development and introduction of our own EV model in the future,” he continued.
March also saw the addition of a new export market as Proton launched the Proton X50 and Proton X90 in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago. Distributed by Ansa Motors, the X50 and X90 are priced from TTD 269,000 (~RM 188k) and TTD 419,000 (~RM 293k) respectively.
