The V177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan, launched in Malaysia in April 2019, offers a stylish and more affordable entry point into the Mercedes-Benz brand.
Somewhat replacing the previous generation Mercedes-Benz CLA (as the entry level Mercedes-Benz sedan model) and competing directly with the BMW 218i Gran Coupe, the A-Class sedan has since garnered popularity for its elegant proportions and performance, particularly among younger buyers moving up from Japanese cars.
Today, however, with prices starting at just over RM 140k, used units of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan are priced similarly to a new Honda Civic (FE) or Mazda 3. Would you skip the Japanese model and go straight for a Mercedes-Benz? Let's take a closer look.
Overview
The V177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan was first introduced in Malaysia in 2019, following the launch of the W177 A-Class hatchback a few months prior. It was initially offered as a fully imported (CBU) model in two variants: the A 200 Progressive Line, priced at RM 230k, and the A 250 AMG Line, at RM 268k.

The sedan measures 4,549 mm in length, making it 130 mm longer and 6 mm taller than the hatchback, with an identical wheelbase. This gives it a more elegant profile and a larger 420-litre boot, offering 50 litres more cargo space than the hatchback.
Under the hood, the A 200 is equipped with a 1.33-litre four-cylinder turbo engine producing 163 PS and 250 Nm of torque, while the A 250 features a 2.0-litre engine generating 224 PS and 350 Nm. Both variants are paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission driving the front wheels, with the A 250 benefiting from a more advanced multilink rear suspension.
Key features include LED High-Performance headlights, twin exhaust exits, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The A 250βs AMG Line package adds sportier design elements and larger brakes. Inside, both variants feature twin 10.25-inch displays with the MBUX interface, and standard safety features like 7 airbags, AEB, and Active Parking Assist.
In 2021, locally assembled (CKD) versions were introduced, with prices starting at RM 220k for the A 200 and RM 250k for the A 250. These CKD models added features such as dual-zone climate control and rear AC vents.

A 2022 update brought a slight price increase and additional features like ambient lighting and powered seats, though the rear AC vents were removed.
In 2023, the A-Class sedan facelift was introduced getting styling updates, the latest (NTG7) MBUX interface, and crucially a 48V mild-hybrid system and AWD for the A 250. Prices for the facelifted models are RM 242k for the A 200 and RM 270k for the A 250.
Why Should You Buy a Used Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan?
A used Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan offers a stylish and premium entry into the luxury sedan market at a more affordable price point.
With used units available from around RM 140k, it competes directly with a new Honda Civic in terms of price today, but offers the added prestige of the Mercedes-Benz badge.

Given the modelβs relatively young age, you can also find unregistered and locally-sold pre-owned units that still retain their original warranty, providing more peace of mind. The A-Class sedan's blend of style, comfort, and technology makes it an excellent choice for those looking to step into the luxury car segment without passing the RM 200k mark.
Conclusion
When considering a used Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan, it's essential to take note of the model year and specific trim level that best suits your needs and budget.
Though the A-Class sedan has a relatively good track record of reliability, as with any used car purchase, it's advisable to get a comprehensive inspection by a qualified mechanic or third party to ensure the vehicle's condition is up to par.
