In an adrenaline-fueled moment during the recent Race 1 of Round 2 of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Challenge, the "Prince of Drift," Tengku Djan Ley, found himself in a heart-stopping incident on the second lap. Battling for position in 9th place, his car suddenly veered out of control entering Turn 1 at Sepang Circuit.
His Toyota Vios racing machine, appeared uncontrollable as it darted off the track onto the grassy verge before torpedoing across the racetrack in a terrifying collision, taking out William Ho in 3rd place in a nasty shunt.
It remains unclear whether the dramatic crash was caused by driver error or a mechanical problem. In a post-race update on Instagram, Tengku Djan shared his relief, saying, “Had a big moment heading to T1 which destroyed our whole weekend. Feeling sore and still in recovery mode. Glad everyone came out of this unharmed.”
Tengku Djan's race car also looks to have sustained signifcant damage on the rear of the passenger side, following the incident.
To recap, the Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Challenge is a 'one-make' race series, where drivers compete on identical cars. It's the most honest, truest measure of who is the better driver. The fact that the race is done using regular Toyota Vios that regular people can buy, makes it even more interesting.
Round 3 of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Challenge returns to Sepang from 3 to 5 January 2025 for its Grand Finale Festival. Don’t miss the final showdown! Stay updated by visiting Toyota Malaysia's website or following their social media channels.
Arvind can't remember a time when he didn't wheel around a HotWheels car. This love evolved into an interest in Tamiya and RC cars and finally the real deal 1:1 scale stuff. Passion finally lead to formal training in Mechanical Engineering. Instead of the bigger picture, he obsesses with the final drive ratio and spring rates of cars and spends the weekends wondering why a Perodua Myvi is so fast.
