We’ve already seen the 2021 Subaru BRZ making its global debut in the US, so it’s only natural to ask when the other half of the Toyobaru coupe twin will be launched. According to Japanese sources, the answer is May 2021.
As before, the second generation Toyota 86 will mirror the Subaru BRZ’s mechanicals, built by Subaru to. Like the Subaru BRZ, the ‘flat-four’ engine’s capacity has been increased to 2.4-litre.
The body is slightly longer and wider too, and kerb weight has been bumped up by around 50 kg, depending on variant.
In US specifications, the new engine (basically a naturally aspirated version of the Subaru Ascent’s FA24) makes 231 PS and 249 Nm.
In line with Toyota’s effort to spread the reach of the Gazoo Racing name, the all-new 86 will be renamed as the Toyota GR86.
Word has it that the Subaru BRZ will not be sold in Japan, as doing so will increase Subaru’s fleet-wide average CO2 emissions, thus running foul with Japanese regulators. Toyota however, sells more than enough hybrids to off-set the GR86’s emissions.
If this is true, it also means that the outgoing generation Subaru BRZ will be the last model that us Malaysians can buy from a local recond dealer.
Subaru has also confirmed that the BRZ will not be sold in Europe too, including the UK, again due to compliance with CO2 emissions regulations.
Also, since Malaysia's import and excise duty structure is based on engine capacity, a 2.4-litre Toyota GR86 will definitely bump up the prices a lot more.
As for the outgoing BRZ, below is Jason's take on it. By the way, WapCar Plus is our new channel, focusing more on enthusiast type cars, while our regular WapCar channel will focus on consumer friendly buying guides.
