MITI: Tesla's RM 59 million investment in EV charging network to boost Malaysia as a regional green technology hub 01

In response to recent reports suggesting that Tesla would not proceed with manufacturing talks in Southeast Asia, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, has announced ongoing collaboration with Tesla to position Malaysia as a key player in the green technology sector.

Discussions with Tesla Malaysia emphasised the progress and implementation of the Global BEV Pioneer AP Scheme. As of July 2024, Tesla has installed 52 Supercharger units with 250 kW capacity, 54 AC Wall Connectors, and over 4,500 residential chargers across Peninsular Malaysia.

This expansion of the EV charging network represents an investment of approximately USD 13.5 million (around RM 59 million).

“This collaboration is about building the necessary infrastructure to support the growth of electric vehicles and promote the transition to green technologies,” Tengku Zafrul noted on his social media. Among the representatives from Tesla present during the discussions was Isabel Fan, Tesla's Regional Director.

A key topic during the discussions was the potential of Tesla’s battery energy storage technology. This technology is expected to improve energy efficiency and enhance the stability of Malaysia’s electrical grid. The implementation of these storage solutions could also contribute to reducing energy costs and strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure.

“The potential for battery storage technology to enhance grid stability and energy efficiency is significant,” Tengku Zafrul stated. “These advancements could play a crucial role in lowering energy costs and improving national energy resilience.”

Tesla’s involvement extends to collaboration with local businesses and educational institutions. The company is working with nine Malaysian firms to develop EV charging infrastructure, aiming to support the local industry.

Tesla is also partnering with local universities to facilitate knowledge transfer and human capital development, which are considered essential for the long-term sustainability of green technology initiatives.

“These collaborations with local companies and universities will help in building the required infrastructure and ensuring that relevant skills and knowledge are developed within Malaysia,” said Tengku Zafrul.

The partnership with Tesla is expected to position Malaysia as a key hub for green technology in the region, potentially bringing economic, technological, and sustainable energy benefits to the country. The ongoing efforts are aligned with Malaysia’s broader goals of economic development and environmental sustainability.

“We are looking forward to the continued development of this partnership,” Tengku Zafrul commented. “This collaboration holds the potential to deliver substantial benefits to Malaysia’s economy, technological capabilities, and sustainable energy initiatives.”

The quest for automotive knowledge began as soon as the earliest memories. Various sources information, even questionable ones, have been explored including video games, television, magazines, or even internet forums. Still stuck in that rabbit hole.
