Immaculate 1989 Proton Saga Black Knight Edition wins classic car award!

This immaculate 1989 Proton Saga 1.5 GL Black Knight Edition that you see here has just been crowned the winner of the Concours de l’Ordinaire at the 2021 Hagerty Festival of the Unexceptional in Lincolnshire, UK. 

The Concours de l’Ordinaire is a celebration of everyday cars with a competitive element.

And this remarkable 1989 Proton Saga 1.5 GL Black Knight Edition - owned by Jon Coupland - fended off a truly impressive field of exceptionally.... unexceptional cars to take the ultimate prize (which was a trophy shaped like a mug of tea). 

This particular Proton Saga is powered by a 4G15 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine and mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. And because this is a GL model, this unit has no power steering nor power windows (wind down your own windows, classic!).

What it does have is a neat rubber boot spoiler, and some distinctive 'Knight' stickers to let everyone know this is no ordinary Proton Saga

According to Coupland, his 1989 Proton is, literally the last remaining example of the Black Knight Edition, of which Proton sold 201 units in the UK.

Coupland says the car’s original owner garaged the car due to ill-health, in 1993, having covered a mere 3600 miles. It remained in the garage until 2017, when it was sold to its second owner before being driven for nearly a further 10,000 miles.

Now, Coupland uses the car sparingly to show at events like the Hagerty Festival of the Unexceptional. Being the last remaining Proton Saga 1.5 GL Black Knight Edition, we hope Coupland will continue cherishing his wonderfully-maintained specimen.
