Let’s face it – the Nissan Almera nameplate doesn’t exactly conjure the best of memories for most folks, given how abysmal the previous N17 generation was.
Now, after spending even more quality time with the brand-new N18-generation Almera, we’re certain that Nissan is back, stronger than ever.
First things first – out goes the gutless naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre engine paired to an equally-old 4-speed torque converter gearbox. The new-generation N18 Almera gets a properly sophisticated turbocharged 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine (100 PS, 152 Nm), hooked up to a CVT transmission. Mind you, the N18 Almera is the only B-segment sedan to offer such a powertrain.
Now, before you cringe at the mere mention of a CVT transmission, the Jatco-sourced unit in the N18 Almera is quite a gem. It is silky smooth with seamless pseudo shifts, something that’s previously unheard of, never mind in a Nissan.
Combined with the tiny three-pot engine, the N18 Almera sips fuel. Even with less-than-ideal traffic conditions, the N18 Almera is extremely frugal; you can achieve an average of 5-litre/100 km without trying, which says a lot.
Now, despite sharing its V platform with the previous N17-generation Almera, you won’t be able to tell – even the cabin has been refreshed.
Gone is the awful dashboard, now replaced with a modern dual-tone dashboard with a large infotainment display. As slick and responsive as the infotainment is, it only offers support for Apple CarPlay, leaving Android Auto users in the dark.
Downsides? The CVT does have a tendency of being a tad bit jerky on take-offs, but it’s far from being a deal-breaker, while the lack of Android Auto detracts from an otherwise fine car.
If you can look beyond those small niggles, then you’re in for a very underrated sedan – one that encompasses great styling as well as offering class-leading fuel economy and safety.
