Honda N-Box is Japan's best-selling car of H1 2023 - Toyota Yaris tops regular car sales

A curious little oddity at recond dealers, the Honda N-Box has topped Japan’s automotive sales chart in the first half of 2023 with 112,248 units sold. Ever since the minibar on wheels was first introduced in 2011, 2,413,443 units of the N-Box have been sold.

The N-Box is Japan’s best-selling kei vehicle for 8 years in a row since 2015 and it became the country’s best-selling car overall from 2017 to 2020. In 2021, its title was taken by the Toyota Yaris (the TNGA one) but the N-Box swiped back the crown in 2022.

Speaking of the Yaris, it is Japan's best-selling regular car for the first half of 2023 with 97,421 units sold. This figure includes models with the Yaris nameplate including the Yaris Cross (not the DNGA one).

Japan has two different sales charts involving domestic models - one for kei vehicles and the other for regular cars. Sitting behind the N-Box as the country's second best-selling kei vehicle is the Daihatsu Tanto with 80,085 units followed by the Daihatsu Move with 62,091 units.

Over on the regular car sales chart, 9 Toyota models filled the country's top 10 best-sellers of the first half of 2023 with only the Nissan Note breaking the all-Toyota sales chart by placing 6th.

Coincidentally, the first year that the N-Box became Japan’s best-selling car in 2017 was also the year that saw the introduction of the second-generation model. Though there are newer and fresher rivals, the N-Box stood its ground and became a hit for Honda in Japan.
