It’s perhaps a lesser-known fact, but Volvo pioneered the 7-seater SUV concept with the original Volvo XC90, offering a superb blend of space, practicality, safety, and performance. The second-generation Volvo XC90 further built on this foundation, underpinned by Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). This flagship model introduced a new range of plug-in hybrid powertrains, a fresh design language, and safety technology to influence a new era of Volvo models.
Delivering a sublime blend of style, prestige, and technology, the Volvo XC90 can now be had for the price of a new Proton X50 if you opt for early production year units.
Additionally, pre-owned 2023/24 units are advertised on WapCar’s Cars for Sale page with significant price reductions compared to new units. Let’s take a closer look.
Overview
The second-generation Volvo XC90 was launched in Malaysia in December 2015, starting with the 407 PS/640 Nm T8 Twin Engine Inscription variant. This model featured a 2.0-litre turbo- and supercharged plug-in hybrid powertrain, driving the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission while an 87 PS/240 Nm electric motor powered the rear axle. Early models came equipped with a 9.2 kWh battery in the central tunnel.
In June 2016, Volvo Malaysia introduced the locally assembled (CKD) version of the XC90, reducing prices from the fully imported model’s RM 454k to RM 404k, albeit with fewer interior trim and paint options.
By 2018, the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine Inscription Plus variant was introduced at RM 414k. This variant featured a Bowers & Wilkins 19-speaker sound system with a 1,400-watt amplifier, unlike the standard 10-speaker 330-watt system in other models. Other specifications, including black Nappa leather upholstery, Comfort seats, and the Sensus Connect infotainment system, remained the same, though both variants no longer included a surround-view camera.
Later in 2018, the Volvo XC90 T5 AWD Momentum, priced at RM 374k, was introduced as a new entry-level option. It featured a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 254 PS and 350 Nm of torque. Key equipment changes included a gloss black grille, smaller 19-inch wheels, cross-brushed aluminium inlays, and a regular gear knob. It also came with LED headlamps, a 9-inch Sensus Connect infotainment system, and a 10-speaker audio setup.
In 2020, the XC90 facelift was launched in Malaysia, featuring subtle design tweaks and powertrain updates. The T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid variant received a larger 11.6 kWh battery, increasing the electric range to 50 km. Prices remained consistent, with the T5 Momentum at RM 374k, the T8 Inscription at RM 400k and the T8 Inscription Plus at RM 410k. The T5 variant gained four-zone climate control and third-row air vents.
By 2023, the Volvo XC90 in Malaysia saw further powertrain updates and the introduction of two new Ultimate variants. The B5 Ultimate, priced at RM 417k, featured a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with a 48V mild hybrid system, producing 263 PS and 390 Nm.
The Recharge T8 Ultimate, priced at RM 433k, included a PHEV powertrain with a larger 18.8 kWh battery, now delivering 462 PS and 709 Nm, courtesy of a more powerful rear motor. It also offered a further 77 km electric range. Both variants came with new 20-inch black diamond-cut alloy wheels and updated interior trim options.
Why should I buy a used Volvo XC90?
Simply put, the Volvo XC90 is one of the best SUVs you can buy for the money. It offers a superb blend of performance, efficiency, and practicality for the entire family and is also one of the safest cars on the road. With prices ranging from RM 105k to RM 370k for pre-owned units, the XC90 caters to a variety of budgets, provided you don’t mind opting for an older model.
However, for our money, the post-2023 units with the upgraded battery and more power, of which there are quite a few examples on the WapCar Cars for Sale page are the pick of the bunch.
Moreover, despite its age, the XC90 still exudes prestige and commands status wherever it goes.
Conclusion
Considering the model year and specific trim level best fits your needs and budget is wise. As always, getting a comprehensive inspection by a qualified mechanic or third party before purchase is advisable to ensure the vehicle’s condition.
From affordable used vehicles to luxury reconditioned options, BEVs, and everything in between, you can find them all on WapCar’s Cars for Sale page.
