Michael Fassbender, the man that we all know better as the “young” Magneto, will be making his European Le Mans racing debut this year in the customer squad with the Proton Competition team, a German based Le Mans Racing team (nothing to do with Proton Holdings). And Porsche has documented his entire journey in the second season of Road to Le Mans.
Road to Le Mans is a web series first launched last year to document the Hollywood star’s racing journey to the 24 hours of Le Mans. The first season followed Fassbender as he navigated through the gruelling challenges in Level 2 of the Porsche Racing Experience training programme.
For the first season, Fassbender contested an entire season of the Porsche Sports Cup Deutschland driving a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.
This year, Fassbender has graduated on to the European Le Mans Series, signalling the next level in his motorsport career. The 42-year-old German-Irish native will be piloting a 2017-spec Porsche 911 RSR fielded by Proton Competition customer squad.
He will be competing in the LM GTE Class – the GT category of the long-distance series and will share the cockpit of the No. 93 car with Porsche works driver Richard Lietz (Austria) and Felipe Fernandez Laser (Germany).
The new season of Road to Le Mans will air at the end of this year. Looks like Fassbender is ever closer to his ultimate dream of racing in the 24 Hour of Le Mans! Now, this is a good insight to how racing enthusiasts make their way to the ultimate endurance series don’t you think?
There isn’t a time in memory that doesn’t involve staring at cars. After discovering the excitement of watching Schumacher vs Hakkinen, Formula 1 became a major part of life. The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
