Here's the world's first look at the upcoming Mazda CX-80, as seen through patent filings on Japan's patent database, J-PlatPlat.

Billed as the replacement to the long-standing CX-8 – which has been discontinued in Japan – the CX-80 is part of Mazda's battalion of all-new SUVs that's set for the Japanese and European markets.

The North American market, by the way, has their own set of models: the CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90.

On to the topic at hand though, the CX-80 looks a lot like the rest of the models announced prior, largely keeping the same face as the CX-60 and CX-70, for example.

Looking at it from the sides it's clear that the CX-80 has a long wheelbase, indicating that it's bound to keep its three-row, seven-seat recipe of its predecessor.

What's under the hood however, should see a radical change. As the CX-80 is a ‘Large Group’ product, so it will be offered with 3 powertrain options, depending on markets – a rear-wheel drive (or all-wheel drive) 6-cylinder regular combustion engine, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and a 48 mild-hybrid (MHEV).

The powertrain line-up will include gasoline (SkyActiv-X) and diesel (SkyActiv-D) options. Power figures are something that’s still unknown at this point of time.
