The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has just announced the sales figures of new vehicles in the country during the first half of the year (H1 2023). A total of 366,037 units of new vehicles were sold between January and June 2023, an increase of 10.3% compared to H1 2022 (331,746).
Passenger cars continue to be the biggest contributor to sales with 326,661 units sold, an increase of 11.2% compared to the same period in 2022 (293,752). “National" makes continue to be the more popular choice among Malaysian buyers with 220,702 units sold, holding a 66% market share.
Meanwhile, non-Malaysian brands saw a dip in sales in H1 2023 with 105,959 units sold, a drop of 3% compared to the same period last year.
In terms of brands, Perodua continues its lead with 144,690 units sold followed by Proton with 76,012 units and Toyota at third with 48,145 units.
Honda and Mitsubishi round up the Top 5 best-selling brands in Malaysia in H1 2023 with 33,727 units and 11,811 units respectively.
On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, except for April and June, the monthly total industry volume (TIV) was consistently higher in H1 2023 compared to similar corresponding months in H1 2022. Aside from April, the industry was able to sustain its monthly TIV at over the 50,000 mark for the entire first half of 2023.
Meanwhile, the total production volume of new vehicles in Malaysia increased by 14% compared to H1 2022 (317,933) with 362,535 units built in H1 2023. The big increase in production volume was in tandem with the higher overall sales in H1 2023.

Despite some challenges in the country’s economy, MAA remains positive for the remainder of 2023, revising its sales forecast to 725,000 units. This is a significant increase compared to MAA’s original forecast of 650,000 units sold.

In 2022, sales of new vehicles in Malaysia reached an all-time high of 720,658 units. One of the reasons for MAA’s sales forecast revision is due to the well-received reception of the local carmakers as well as healthy sales orders from MAA members in the first half of the year.
