While the Mazda 3 is definitive representation of the Mazda today, it is the more family-friendly Mazda CX-5 that is funding the development of all future Mazda models.
Mazda Motor Corporation announced that it sold 1,287,548 cars in 2021, up 3.6 percent. Sales was up in all major markets, with the most important USA market (contributing 26 percent of Mazda’s total sales) up by 19.2 percent.
Further growth however, was hampered by a slowdown in Mazda’s domestic sales in Japan, which was down 11.2 percent due to shortage of semiconductor parts and Covid-19 restrictions.
The Mazda 2 is Mazda’s most important model in Japan, selling 24,659 units (down 13.4 percent), followed by the Mazda CX-5 (22,414 units, down 7.4%), and Mazda CX-30 (19,338 units, down 28.3%).
Elsewhere, especially in the US, it is the SUV models that are bringing in the money.

A total of 381,800 units of the Mazda CX-5 (up 5.7 percent) were sold worldwide, followed by the Mazda 3 (234,485 units, down 2.1%), and Mazda CX-30 (222,617 units, down 24.4 percent).
Closer to home, the contribution of the Mazda CX-5 is even higher, at 54 percent, mainly because it is one of only two locally-assembled (CKD) Mazda models in Malaysia. The other CKD model sold by Bermaz is the three-row seat Mazda CX-8.
The rest of Mazda’s range in Malaysia are imported either from Japan or Thailand, thus attracting higher tax. The only exception to this is the Thailand-made the Mazda BT-50, the latter is being a commercial vehicle, is exempted from excise tax.
The aging Mazda CX-5 is due for a facelift. The new look CX-5 had just went on sale in Japan late last year, but no South East Asian country has launched the new model yet.
