204 PS and 500 Nm new 2020 Toyota Hilux launched in Thailand, 2021 debut in Malaysia?

Toyota has introduced the new 2020 Toyota Hilux facelift in Thailand, now with a more powerful 2.8-litre turbodiesel that churns out 204 PS and 500 Nm.

Powertrain – 27 PS and 50 Nm more than before

As reported earlier, the new Hilux gains a revised 2.8-litre turbodiesel with increased power figures. Compared to the outgoing 2.8-litre unit, the improved 2.8-litre delivers 204 PS and 500 Nm, 27 PS and 50 Nm more than before.

Power figures for 2.4-litre turbodiesel unit remain unchanged – 151 PS and 400 Nm. Despite not receiving an increase in power, the 2.4-litre unit is said to deliver better fuel efficiency than before.

Exterior – Tacoma-inspired looks, flared arches for Revo Rocco

Next up is the visual changes – the top-of-the-line Hilux Revo Rocco gains a revised front-end that is heavily-inspired by the US market Toyota Tacoma, featuring a more angular and pronounced front grille flanked by a pair of LED headlights.

The updated Hilux Revo Rocco also gets flared wheel arches, black mirror caps, black sports bar, and Rocco decals at the rear of the truck. Completing the exterior are black 18-inch alloy wheels with white lettering on the tires.

Other variants, like the Hilux Revo Standard Cab, PreRunner, and Z Edition also gain a revised front-end and rear-end, albeit less aggressive than the Revo Rocco.

Depending on the variant, the new Hilux can be had with LED headlights or halogen headlights.

Interior – Now with Apple CarPlay across the range

Moving inside, for the Thai market, all variants of the updated Hilux gain an 8-inch touchscreen head unit with Apple CarPlay support. That said, upper variants ( Revo PreRunner, Revo Z Edition, Revo Rocco) have more physical buttons surrounding the touchscreen, while the Revo Standard Cab features a more simple-looking head unit.

Safety – Toyota Safety Sense is now available

For the first time ever, the Thailand market's Toyota Hilux gains the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) ADAS suite, which includes Pre-Collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Alert. TSS is only available on the top-of-the-line Revo Rocco.

Prices start from THB 544,000 (~RM 73,409) onwards for the Revo Standard Cab, topping out at THB 1,239,000 (~RM 167,199) for the Revo Rocco. Keep in mind that the prices you see here aren't applicable to the Malaysian market, as the tax structure varies between countries.

When will it be launched in Malaysia?

Considering that the Toyota Hilux is locally-assembled at Toyota’s plant in Shah Alam, a late-2020 or early-2021 local debut is likely, owing to the additional lead time required for local assembly.

Toyota's Kinto is getting bored, finds a way to make the AH30 Alphard and Vellfire sliding doors close faster

You know how some cars can be truly fantastic except for one minor detail that you just can’t overlook and it ends up ruining the entire driving experience. It could be a terrible head unit or a bad seating position. Well, some of the engineers at Toyota’s Kinto subscription service thought that could be the abysmally slow speed of the sliding doors on the previous AH30 generation of the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. Either that or they must be getting really bored over there. Or someone has secr

Review: BYD Dolphin in Malaysia - A solid choice for EV beginners, except for one thing

You might be aware that Malaysia prohibits the import of electric vehicles (EVs) priced below RM 100,000, and this is indeed accurate. The rationale behind this policy, driven by the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI), is actually sound when you consider their goal of attracting investments in the EV sector. In the world of technology, most of the valuable stuff is in the higher-end product range. Cheaper electric cars have minimal technological sophistication; they're kind of li
