The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia wrapped up its 21st season with an intense showdown at the Shanghai International Circuit, where Alessandro Ghiretti clinched the championship title in his debut campaign.
The season finale also featured the popular Endurance Challenge, marking an exciting conclusion with three races, including the 43-minute + 1 lap Endurance Cup.
Despite challenging wet conditions throughout the weekend, drivers pushed their skills to the limit on a slippery track. Dylan Pereira, representing Team Shanghai Yongda BWT, arrived as an outsider in the title race but seized pole position for Round 14.
Pereira maintained his lead at the start, while Team Porsche New Zealand’s newcomer Brock Gilchrist and Team Jebsen’s Ghiretti battled fiercely for third.
In the Pro-Am category, Eric Zang showcased his skill under treacherous conditions, securing his third win of the season for TORO Racing. Francis Tjia earned second place, while Bao Jinlong, the 2024 champion, bounced back from an earlier off-track excursion to finish third for Phantom Global Racing.
In the Am class, Bergwerk Motorsport’s Eric Kwong secured a close victory over Munkong Sathienthirakul, bolstering his championship lead, while Hu Bo finished third for Z.SPEED Motorsport. Saturday also welcomed Porsche China’s leadership, including Porsche China’s President and CEO, Alexander Pollich, who attended to support drivers and witness the exciting final events.
The rain persisted for Round 15 on Sunday, where Ghiretti started from pole. Despite pressure from Pereira, Ghiretti held the lead and crossed the finish line to claim the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia title. Gilchrist secured his first podium, rounding off an impressive weekend debut in the series.
The extended Endurance Cup closed out the weekend under cooler, drier conditions. Pereira and Jaubert started in the front row but clashed at Turn 2, opening the door for Ghiretti to slip into the lead. An exciting battle for second unfolded between Gilchrist and Sime Darby Racing Team’s Nazim Azman. Pereira ultimately claimed second, while Gilchrist ended his strong debut weekend in third.
By the way, Malaysia's very own Nazim finished seventh overall in the standings.
In the Pro-Am category, Bao claimed victory and the Endurance Challenge title. The Am class saw drama as Eric Kwong spun off track following contact, but managed to secure the overall class title. Sathienthirakul finished third, earning the Endurance Challenge crown. The race concluded with Henry Kwong as the Am class victor, followed by Hu in second.
Ghiretti, Bao, and Sathienthirakul, as the Endurance Challenge class champions, have been invited as VIP guests to the 2025 Bathurst 12 Hour. The 2025 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season promises new excitement with upcoming races at Mandalika in Indonesia and Mobility Resort Motegi, Japan, with the return of the Endurance Challenge.
The season will launch with test days in Shanghai on 1- and 2-March 2025, followed by the first rounds on 21- to 23-March.
