There’s a bit of Volvo in every car - the three-point seatbelt was introduced by them - and soon, there could be a bit of Mercedes-Benz too as they’ve made the world's-first airbags for rear passengers.
Debuting in the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the luxury sedan will be the first production car to offer full-frontal airbags for rear passengers.
This is in addition to the Belt Bag, in which smaller airbags in the safety belts inflate in case of an accident.
Unlike traditional bags fitted on steering wheels, the rear airbags use a tubular design that reduces impact forces on the head and spine by 30 percent.
The S-Class will also feature an updated Pre-Safe safety system. Once it detects an imminent side impact, it moves occupants to the centre of the car using air cushions in the seats.
The system also simultaneously raises the entire vehicle using the E-Active Body Control suspension to divert the impact through stiffer structures.
The upcoming S-Class is bound to make its global debut on September 2.
