Mercedes-Benz has announced an update to its flagship electric sedan, the EQS. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS’ update focuses on enhancing range, comfort, and driving experience.
One of the highlights in the updated EQS is the new grille design. It now sports a redesigned cover with chrome applications and an upright Mercedes star – a hood ornament.
Next up is its extended range. Thanks to an increased battery capacity from 108.4 kWh to 118 kWh, the EQS now offers up to 82 km more range.
The EQS 450 4Matic sees its maximum range boosted from 717 to 799 km (WLTP), an increase of over 11 percent. Meanwhile, the EQS 450+ surpasses the 800-km mark with a range of up to 822 km (WLTP).
There is also a series of technical refinements aimed at improving efficiency and performance. The introduction of a standard heat pump enhances climate comfort while reducing the vehicle's energy consumption, thereby extending the range.
An increase in brake recuperation levels, coupled with optimisations to the braking system, is claimed to allow more efficient energy regeneration and a better pedal feel for drivers.
Mercedes-Benz says that due to the high proportion of recuperation in daily operation, the brake discs are used less often than in combustion models. The company highlights a special function that will maintain the brake system by automatically applying the pads to the discs from time to time.
The company has also focused on improving towing capabilities for the EQS for the 4Matic variants. The towing capacity has been increased from 750 to 1,700 kg. These feature a Disconnect Unit (DCU) that automatically disengages the front axle's electric motor under light loads, conserving range.
Inside the cabin, passengers are treated to enhanced comfort, with the introduction of the Rear Comfort Package Plus featuring executive seats. This package offers a range of amenities, including a slanted footrest for rear passengers, adjustable backrests up to 38 degrees, and advanced heating options.
In terms of driver aids, the EQS now includes "Automatic Lane Change" function, depending on region. This feature enables automatic lane changes on highways under specific conditions – with two lanes at speeds not exceeding 140 km/h.
