It’s been a long time coming and after several cheeky teases from Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM), the distributor for the marque has at long last officially launched the Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan in Malaysia, with prices starting from RM 289,888.

The World Car of the Year 2023, the Ioniq 6 joins the World Car of the Year 2022, its sibling the Ioniq 5, in doubling the Malaysian Ioniq family.

As for the 2 variants that’s sold in Malaysia, it’s as follows:

  • Ioniq 6 Max RWD – RM 289,888
  • Ioniq 6 Max AWD – RM 319,888

Like most other EVs, the Ioniq 6 is slippery through the air, boasting an aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.21 Cd, making it one of, but not the most, aerodynamic production cars in the world. That record is currently held by the Mercedes-Benz EQS.

While the design of the Ioniq 5 is largely inspired by its past, particularly the Giorgetto Giugiaro-penned Hyundai Pony which was Hyundai’s first model built from the ground up, the Ioniq 6’s unusual but streamlined shape is very much a nod towards the marque’s aggressive plans for the future.

It’s built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that’s shared with the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

The entry-level Ioniq 6 Max RWD variant features a sole electric motor on the rear axle that makes 228 PS and 350 Nm of torque. It’ll do the century sprint in 7.4-second.

As for the Ioniq 6 Max AWD, it has a second electric motor on the front axle for all-wheel drive. Performance here is 325 PS and 605 Nm of torque. The sprint from 0-100 kph drops to 5.1-second.

Through its external or internal power outlet, the EV can charge other electrical devices and serve as a backup power supply during emergencies. It could even be used to rescue a stranded EV.

In terms of safety, the 5-star Euro NCAP Ioniq 6 features 7 airbags and the Hyundai SmartSense suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The suite comprises:

  • Autonomous cruise control with stop/go

“Better late than never.” Some despise it, others begrudgingly agree with it but he swears by it… much to the chagrin of everyone around him. That unfortunately stems from all of his project cars not running most of the time, which in turn is testament to his questionable decision-making skills in life. A culmination of many wrongs fortunately making a right; much like his project cars on the rare occasions they run, he’s still trying to figure out if another project car is the way to go.
