Parting is such bittersweet sorrow and that is the feeling I got when I decided to say goodbye to my 20-year-old Proton Waja. The Arctic Blue sedan has seen its fair share of scrapes, bumps, wears, tears, as well as numerous headlights and door handles replaced but after serving me and my family for around 360,000 km, we had to move on.
Based on my budget, the prime replacement candidate was a Perodua and it was either an Ativa or the all-new Axia. In the end, this Coral Blue Axia was my choice and it has been nearly 2 months since I took ownership of it.
I never once considered a Myvi despite it being the perennial King of Malaysian roads. Yes, it is the “safest” choice but honestly, I never find the current-gen Myvi being comfortable even with the new D-CVT transmission.
The Axia blew me away from the moment I drove it during the media preview. Until today, I still can’t believe how accomplished this entry-level car is though I must say that the variant I chose isn’t the barebones trim.
Nearly 2 months have passed and my top-of-the-line Axia 1.0 AV which I called Coral after its colour has done nearly 2,000 km. Even if it doesn’t have the same engaging feeling as my old manual Waja, it did at least provide great fuel economy and the small size works when driving around the city.
For now, let’s turn back time to when I collected Coral the Axia a couple of months ago with Greg at Perodua Suasa Suria in Taman Maluri, Cheras in the video below. I should probably change my writer’s bio too while I’m at it.
Traded advertising for a career that fits his passion for cars. Enjoys spotting cars during his free time and has a soft spot for Japanese Kei cars but drives a thirsty manual sedan.
