At Auto Shanghai, which begins on 18-April 2023, Toyota Motor Corporation introduced two new battery electric vehicle (BEV) concepts: the bZ Sport Crossover Concept and the bZ FlexSpace Concept.
They are earmarked for launch in the Chinese market in 2024, as two out of the ten BEV models that Toyota plans to introduce by 2026.
The bZ Sport Crossover Concept is a crossover-type BEV developed in collaboration with BYD β in a joint venture called BYD Toyota EV Technology (BTET) β as well as FAW Toyota Motor, and Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (China, TMEC). It will be produced and sold by FAW Toyota Motor.
Based on the concept "Reboot", the car emphasises the idea of youth, and is also said to be equipped with features that are attuned to younger customers. The bZ Sport Crossover Concept will also have post-purchase updates, including intelligent functions such as driver assistance and automatic parking.
On the other hand is the bZ FlexSpace Concept, with is an SUV with an eye for families and utility. This one is being developed in partnership with Guangzhou Automobile Group, GAC Toyota Motor, and TMEC. It will be produced and sold by GAC Toyota Motor.
No word yet on their performance and equipment outlines for both of these concepts in the meantime.
Centering on the "Cozy Home" concept, the focus is on creating a car with large cabin space, ease of use, advanced safety, and with "various intelligent functions."
These pair of concepts follow the Toyota bZ3 sedan, one that's made in collaboration with BYD. The model has already gone on sale in China, and it's the second production bZ model after the bZ4X crossover.
Concurrently, Toyota is working with local partners to expand its BEV portfolio in China. The company went on record in December 2021, promising 30 new BEV models globally by 2030, with 3.5 million BEV sales by the same year too.
