The Nissan Almera, Mazda 2, and Honda HR-V have emerged as quality winners, according to J.D. Power's Thailand Initial Quality Study (IQS).
5,419 new vehicle owners were surveyed from May to September 2022, with their cars evaluated against 8 metrics:
- Exterior
- Driving experience
- Features/controls/displays
- Seats
- Audio/communication/entertainment/navigation
- Heating/ventilation/air conditioning
- Interior
- Engine/transmission.
Initial quality is measured by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the first six months of ownership, with a lower score reflecting higher quality.

Following this metric, the Nissan Almera (134 PP100) outranked the Mitsubishi Attrage (135 PP100), and the Suzuki Swift (149 PP100) in the 'Compact Car' category.
Meanwhile, the Mazda 2 (125 PP100) edged out the Honda City Sedan (128 PP100) and City Hatchback (131 PP100) in the 'Entry Midsize Car' range.

For the 'Compact SUV' category, the Honda HR-V e:HEV (117 PP100) won against the Mazda CX-3 (126 PP100), and the MG ZS (129 PP100). Notably, the HR-V is the only compact SUV to beat the industry average standard, which is 122 PP100.
Semantics of the survey aside, this year's survey sees industry quality performance improved to 130 PP100 from 147 PP100 in 2021. Design-related problems (71 PP100) are more prevalent this year than physical defects and malfunctions (55 PP100).
