BYD has launched its first pick-up truck, the Shark, in Mexico. The BYD Shark is available in two variants: the GL priced at PHP 899,980 (approximately RM 251k) and the GS at PHP 969,800 (approximately RM 271k).
For context, a Toyota Hilux is priced between 796,300 pesos (approximately RM 222k) and 851,400 pesos (approximately RM238k).
Built on a ladder frame chassis with an integrated battery, the Shark uses independent double wishbone suspension at both ends. It offers a bed capacity of 1,450 liters, a payload of 2,665 kg, and a maximum towing capacity of 2,500 kg.
In terms of size, the Shark measures 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, making it quite a bit larger than the Hilux, which has a length of 5,270 mm, width of 1,800 mm, height of 1,795 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,085 mm.
Design-wise, the Shark features boxy and upright lines with chunky fender flares. Thereβs also a full-width lighting signature, roof rails, darkened A-pillars, and 18-inch six-spoke alloy wheels.
The Shark features a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. Combined, the system delivers over 430 PS, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h.
A 29.58 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery is mounted beneath the floor, providing an electric range of 100 km and a total driving range of 840 km. The battery supports up to 40 kW of DC fast charging, enabling a 30 to 80 percent charge in 20 minutes. It also includes a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function.
Inside, thereβs a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen, typical of BYD cars. Features include a 12-inch head-up display, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, an in-car karaoke function, a 360-degree camera with a "transparent bonnet" function.
A full suite of driver assistance systems comes as standard, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centering assist, rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, and blind spot warning.
