Get ready GR86, the all-new Honda Prelude is gearing for launch - hybrid sports car eyes RHD market too

Toyota can't keep running away with the Japanese coupe segment, and the upcoming 2025 Honda Prelude might just be the one to disrupt the GR86's flow.

New leads from Best Car Web points that Honda's show-stopping concept of the 2023 Japan Mobility Show might be a reality after all, with efforts underway to manufacture the model before purportedly starting sales in 2025; 24 years after the last-gen Prelude was discontinued.

Specification and powertrain details haven't been disclosed just yet, but it's very likely to be spun from a modified version of the Civic's platform, and could even share the same 2.0-litre hybrid e:HEV powertrain with it. Not a slouch, mind you – the electric motor produces 315 Nm of instant torque.

Best Car's report also pins the new Prelude to maintain its traditional front-engined, front-wheel drive (FWD) layout.

It being shown in Japan is also a clue that right-hand drive (RHD) markets will be in consideration. Either way, we're glad it's around and will be even happier still if it does make it to production. It's a move that could potentially reignite the interest in coupes, especially in RHD markets to offer a nice blend of nostalgic charm and modern-day driving experience.
