After a 14-year model lifespan, 2023 may be end of the road for the longstanding Proton Exora. Though not officially confirmed by Proton, all signs point to the Proton’s only MPV being discontinued at the end of this year.
Speaking at a press forum today, Mr Ainol Azmil Abu Bakar, Senior Director of Group Technical Procurement for Proton said, “Of the four original models (from Proton), [three] will still continue except for one model that we have announced to suppliers that we are going to EOP (End-Of-Production) by end of the year,”

“The other three models are going to be here for quite a long time and the ‘X’ series (of models) obviously is going to stay perhaps for another 10 years (the nameplate, not the model in its current form),” he added.

First launched in April 2009, the Exora is the oldest model of Proton’s range. Over the years it has continually received minor updates, most notably in 2011 when it received the 138 PS / 205 Nm Campro CFE Turbo engine. It is currently the only model that uses the Campro CFE engine.
Initially offering a great balance of space and overall value, sales of the Exora peaked in 2013 with nearly 23,000 units sold. Sales have since slowed to just 4,275 units in 2022.
Due to the overall contraction of the MPV segment, and aspirational buyers migrating to SUVs, the Perodua Alza will likely become the sole Malaysian MPV model for practical-minded buyers.
With no plans for replacement, and Proton scrapping plans of introducing a Proton version of the Geely Jiaji – rumoured for some time to be the Exora’s successor – it looks like Proton will also exit the segment altogether in 2024.
