The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) reported that the Chinese market sold 9.533 million new cars between January and June 2023. Out of these sales, a total of 2,093,000 cars were battery electric vehicles (BEVs), making China the world's largest EV market.

While BYD retained its dominant position in the market with 524,184 BEVs sold, which accounted for 25.04% of the market share, Tesla’s Model Y was the best-selling model (not just BEV) in China for the first half of 2023 (H1 2023) with 203,932 units sold.

The runner up for best-selling EV in China in H1 2023 is the BYD Dolphin with 153,401 units sold, followed by the BYD Yuan Plus (known as Atto 3 in Malaysia) with 141,077 units.

Fourth place goes to the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, which sold 122,037 units, while fifth and sixth place is held by GAC’s Aion S and Aion Y, with 115,599 units and 92,009 units sold respectively.

The data suggests that sedans are far less popular compared to SUVs, as the Tesla Model 3 takes seventh place with 90,173 units sold, while the BYD Qin Plus EV sold 54,659 units, putting it in eighth place.

Nineth and tenth positions are held by micro EVs, with 50,881 units sold for the Changan Lumin and 48,940 units sold for Geely’s Panda Mini EV.
