Proton inaugurates new R&D centre in China; this will be the birthplace of new EV models 01

In a strategic move to enhance its research and development capabilities, Proton has officially opened a new R&D centre in China. Situated within the Geely Automobile Research Institute (GRI) at Hangzhou Bay, this facility marks a significant step in Proton's collaboration with its partner, Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd (Geely).

The inauguration event, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, was attended by prominent figures including Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Chairman of Proton, and Dr. Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton. They were joined by Geely Auto Group CEO, Jerry Gan, and other representatives from both China and Malaysia.

The new Proton R&D Centre in China is positioned to boost the automaker's ability to design, develop, and manufacture vehicles. This initiative not only complements Proton's existing facilities in Shah Alam and Tanjong Malim, Malaysia, but also leverages the extensive resources and expertise of Geely. This collaboration is expected to foster innovation and facilitate knowledge transfer between the two companies.

With a focus on developing vehicles that meet the specific needs of Proton's customers, the centre aims to mirror the success of China Euro Vehicle Technology (CEVT) in Gothenburg, Sweden. The facility is part of Proton's strategy to integrate more closely into Geely Group’s global network of R&D centres.

The new centre will employ around 50 people and serve as a hub for international talent training and development. It will focus on various areas, including the integration of platforms and technologies for internal combustion engine (ICE) and future electric vehicle (EV) models, intelligent driving, and project management.

Additionally, the R&D centre will play a vital role in enhancing Proton's competitiveness by leveraging Geely’s global presence. It will also act as a critical collaboration platform, engaging with capable vendors to support the development of the Automotive Hi-Tech Valley in Tanjong Malim, Perak.

To ensure efficient operations and collaboration, the centre includes three core departments: the Central Research Institute, Data Intelligence Development Centre, and R&D Digitisation Centre. These departments will work closely with their counterparts at Geely to make the most of local resources in China and oversee the development results of their respective teams.

Dr. Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer of Proton stated “We have witnessed the birth of a facility that allows us to work closer than ever with our partners and will inspire connections for years to come while helping to expand Proton’s global presence.”

“It is our hope this important milestone would enable us to move towards our goal of Proton becoming the sixth Geely Group R&D centre, while bolstering Proton’s existing capabilities that are already well established in Malaysia,” he added.

Passion finally lead to formal training in Mechanical Engineering. Instead of the bigger picture, he obsesses with the final drive ratio and spring rates of cars and spends the weekends wondering why a Perodua Myvi is so fast.
